The ewes are grazing on a hillside that was badly eroded years ago before soil conservation was understood. The grass is thin and sad, meaning I have to be really strategic about how I graze here. By moving a group of just ewes through and letting them eat what they want and trample what they don't, I'm able to get some nutrient cycling going while the lambs eat the limited quantity of lush, high protein fall grass and keep growing.
