Tynemouth Castle and Priory - Alchetron, the free social encyclopedia

High on the cliffs above the North Sea, Tynemouth Priory and Castle has guarded the mouth of the Tyne for more than 1,300 years. The first monastery here was founded in the 7th century, later rebuilt by the Normans into one of the North’s most important religious sites — and the resting place of kings of Northumbria. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, its story turned from prayer to protection, as the site was fortified against invasion from the Spanish Armada through to both World Wars.
