I’m often asked about the difference between PECS and visual supports when it comes to AAC. The term PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) is often used to describe any visuals, communication boards, or paper-based AAC. 💡 But PECS and visual supports aren't the same thing. PECS is a specific protocol that’s highly structured and based on Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) principles. It uses picture cards and communication books, but that doesn't mean every visual or symbol-based tool is
