After nearly six months, the New Mexico National Guard deployment in Albuquerque is wrapping up this week, and as Albuquerque’s police chief prepares to retire, he said the guard’s presence made a noticeable difference. This Friday marks the end of Operation Zia Shield. For months, 70 New Mexico National Guard members have been working alongside Albuquerque police, freeing up officers to focus on fighting crime.
