China expert Gordon Chang called on the U.S. to build ships domestically and rely less on allies while responding to President Trump's office of shipbuilding plan.

The U.S. plans to levy fees on imports arriving on Chinese-made ships and offer tax credits to resuscitate domestic shipbuilding and reduce China's grip on the $150 billion global ocean shipping industry,

The president told lawmakers on Tuesday that he plans to establish a new shipbuilding office to bring ship production back to the U.S.
