The Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday that Greenland is not for sale after President-elect Trump refused to commit to avoiding use of military force to take control of Greenland.

Faced with what many in Denmark are calling Trump's "provocation," Frederiksen has broadly attempted to strike a conciliatory tone, repeatedly referring to the US as "Denmark's closest partner". It was "only natural" that the US was preoccupied by the Arctic and Greenland, she added.

Egede’s remarks, which follow a Dec. 22 post on Truth Social by President-elect Donald Trump advocating for the “ownership and control” of Greenland, focused on the basis of secession from Denmark.

President-elect Donald Trump told residents of Greenland that "we're going to treat you well" as his oldest son visited the mineral-rich Danish territory that's home to a large U.S. military base, heightening speculation that the incoming U.S. administration could seek to acquire it.

The president-elect’s latest proposal places politicians in Copenhagen and the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk in a great bind.

Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede contended at the end of last month that the island territory should be independent from Denmark. Those comments come after President-elect Donald Trump revealed that he will pursue an acquisition of Greenland by the United States.
