A large pillar of black smoke could be seen from kilometres away as fire broke out at an east London vehicle lot on Monday morning.

A fire at an electrical substation disrupted train service throughout London, including the underground Tube, and forced evacuations at stations on Monday.

Damage was caused to the entrance of a property belonging to the prime minister in Kentish Town, but nobody was hurt, the police said.

A train line has been shut due to a large fire at an industrial unit. Five appliances are tackling the blaze in Birtley, Gateshead, which broke out just before 15:00 BST. London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said it had closed lines between Durham and Newcastle and that trains were cancelled or subject to delays until at least 18:00.
