It's time to prepare for heavy snow this weekend as a rapidly intensifying winter storm arrives.

"An intense surge of arctic air behind the coastal storm is bringing below freezing temperatures and wind chills," the WPC said.

A historic snowstorm has blanketed eastern North Carolina, creating dangerous travel conditions on roads and bridges in Carteret County. Piles of snow blown by strong winds are blocking neighborhoods, and emergency vehicles are struggling to reach some areas, according to the county’s latest update .

It could become a bomb cyclone and impact some of the same areas just hit by a monster storm this past weekend.

More than 1,100 flights were canceled Sunday as airports worked to recover from heavy snow, high winds and lingering power outages.
