Vatican City • Catholic Hollywood director D.J. Caruso (“Disturbia”) set out to tell the story of Mary as seen through her own eyes in a new film available this week on Netflix. “You may think you know my story,” Mary tells viewers at the start of the film. “Trust me, you don’t.”

"Mary" tells the story of the Virgin Mary from childhood through the birth of Jesus. Some biblical experts think the film strays from the truth.

When it comes to Christmas films, many people might picture fairy tales or romantic comedies, but Netflix is now taking a more literal approach with "Mary," a biblical drama centred on the birth of Jesus.

Despite its sincere tribute to Mary’s story, the film falters with over-the-top drama and underdeveloped characters, making it a mixed holiday offering.
