DENVER (KDVR) — The playoff push is on for the Avalanche and it’s a tight race. Twenty games remain on the schedule going into Thursday’s matchup against the San Jose Sharks.

The Colorado Avalanche came into the season with championship aspirations and Alexandar Georgiev as their top goaltender.

Few details were immediately available but a sheriff's office spokesperson said the avalanche was triggered around 4:45 p.m. in the "Fingers Area" on Berthoud Pass near Winter Park.

As one man became buried, the other tried to locate him by using his avalanche rescue transceiver, officials with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) said.

The victim was traveling on a terrain feature known as The Nose near Silverton, Colo., when the avalanche occurred on Thursday, officials said.
