Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Tuesday that an attempt to stage what he called a "revolution" in the country had failed, after a fifth successive night of protests against a decision to suspend talks to join the European Union.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the parliament, throwing stones and setting off fireworks, while police deployed water cannons and tear gas.

More than 200 people have been detained after four nights of protests in the Georgian capital over the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union. The demonstrations came after the EU lambasted Georgia’s parliamentary elections.
