Portsmouth Councilman De’Andre Barnes is accused of forcibly pushing his wife into a door at a residence in front of police on Sunday night, according to court documents. Police were initially responding to the residence on Boat Street for a report of a burglary.

It was shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when City Council member De’Andre Barnes called 911 to report that an armed man he didn’t know was trying to break into his house, according to police and a court document.

Portsmouth court documents state Barnes' wife was gathering belongings when he allegedly pushed her into a storm door "with great force" in front of police.
