Some Latino-run businesses closed over the weekend and remained shuttered Monday in Charlotte, a city of 943,000 people and one of the fastest growing U.S. areas.

The popular Charlotte bakery closed due to safety concerns. Two days later, a crowd gathered to declare the city a place of solidarity.

DHS says the surge is meant to target public safety threats, but Charlotte leaders warn the federal operation is heightening fear.

The Trump administration is planning to dispatch Border Patrol agents to Charlotte and New Orleans to oversee immigration operations that could involve armored vehicles and special operations teams.

Vanessa Blancas and her sister Daisy went with their father to Super G Sunday but were wary about Border Patrol after Saturday’s incident. The Blancas, born in the United States but of Mexican heritage, said when they arrived they were “looking for immigration cars.”
