The Preds made their first significant trade in a couple of months over the weekend, when they dealt forward Gustav Nyquist to Minnesota in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick. Nashville retained half of Nyquist’s salary — $1.6 million — for this season as part of the swap.

Nyquist managed an assist and two shots on goal in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Jets. Ryan O'Reilly won a faceoff and Nyquist got the puck to Filip Forsberg for a quick goal at 4:26 of the first period.

The Wild operate with a higher degree of difficulty than 31 teams in the NHL, and trading their first-round pick for David Jiricek gives them less draft capital to offer other teams. That's all understandable. Nyquist was available, he could fit into the Wild's cap picture, and there was familiarity. It's not hard to see why the trade got made.
