SMU is currently 5–3, and sits in a four-way tie for fourth place in the ACC. The Mustangs gave coach Rhett Lashlee a contract extensio n Friday, and it paid off quickly with a win over his former team.

One of the top candidates named by various personalities and outlets was SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee, who played quarterback for the Razorbacks and is a native of Springdale, Arkansas. He was also a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 2006.

At many moments this season, SMU couldn’t catch a break. Early on, it was injuries to multiple starters. Then, it was two close losses in non-conference play to in-state rivals when SMU held fourth-quarter leads.

SMU bounced back from a road loss to crosstown rival TCU on Sept. 27 and looked a little like the Mustangs that were talented enough to earn a berth in the College Football Playoff last year. But it wasn't easy. SMU led by 28 early in the fourth quarter, yet had to make plays down the stretch to secure the win.
