Russia said its forces had pushed deeper into the eastern Ukrainian cities of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk on Tuesday, with one video showing Russian soldiers rolling into Pokrovsk on motorbikes and even on the roofs of battered cars and vans.

The attack by Russian missiles and drones targeted the capital, Kyiv, and the large cities of Dnipro and Kharkiv, as well as several smaller municipalities.

The attack in Dnipro, Ukraine’s fourth-largest city, was part of a large Russian missile and drone barrage across the country that targeted power infrastructure.

Oleksandr Syrskyi says special forces have been deployed but denies Russian reports Ukrainian troops are surrounded in Pokrovsk.

Pokrovsk, a road and rail hub in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, had a pre-war population of some 60,000 people. But most people have now fled, all children have been evacuated and few civilians remain amid its pulverised apartment buildings and cratered roads.

It would take Kiev, hopefully, a year from the moment the US decided to deliver those projectiles until they were ready to launch them. The American Tomahawk missiles have become the latest piece of military equipment that Ukraine and its European allies want so that Kiev can confront a Russia that seems to have lost all possibility of victory,
