WSU apple breeder Kate Evans announced that the state's newest apple will officially be called Sunflare at the Northwest Horticulture Expo in Yakima on Dec. 10. Sunflare was chosen from 15,000 responses submitted during a public contest to name the new apple known as WA 64 until a name was picked.

The apple, a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink previously known as WA 64, will be called Sunflare. The name was picked from more than 15,000 responses to a public naming contest. A news release from WSU said Sunflare was a memorable name that highlighted the apple’s appearance — a pink blush on a yellow background.
