When a movie has its second weekend at the box office, the baseline expectation is that ticket sales will drop about 50 percent. If it has particularly strong hype going for it, that drop may be closer to 40 percent,

“Sinners,” which director Ryan Coogler filmed using Imax cameras, has been a force on premium screens. In Imax alone, the movie has added $12.3 million worldwide over the weekend, boosting its overall tally to $20.6 million. Those ticket sales represent 19% of the film’s overall gross.

If any lesson, or rather a reminder, is to be taken from the success of “Sinners,” it’s to stop counting out Black stories. You’d be surprised by how many people show up and show out for them.
