Australia's Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said on Tuesday that "the slaughter has to end" in Gaza after 28 countries including Britain, Japan and a host of European nations issued a joint statement Monday saying the war in Gaza "must end now.

Smoke was seen rising after strikes hit Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip on Sunday. It comes as the Israeli military published new evacuation warnings for areas of central Gaza on Sunday, in one of the few areas where the military has rarely operated with ground troops.

Israel issued new evacuation orders in Gaza as dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire while they waited for food in northern Gaza.

Officials from the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said at least 100 people were killed when Israeli soldiers fired at a food distribution site. Israel disputed the casualty figures, and said that IDF soldiers fired warning shots to respond to an immediate threat.

The Humanitarian Director in Gaza of Save The Children on Sunday said the situation in Gaza had "never been so bad" as at least 85 Palestinians were killed while trying to reach food at locations across the territory on the deadliest day yet for aid-seekers in over 21 months of war.
