Former election-chief-turned-rebel-leader Corneille Nangaa has gone from overseeing Congo’s contested 2018 election to leading a powerful insurgency against the DRC’s President Félix Tshisekedi.
DRC President Felix Tshisekedi vowed a "vigorous response" to the advances of the M23. The M23 announced earlier in the day that it was willing to dialogue with the DRC government.
The eastern DRC city of Goma was seized by M23 rebels and their Rwandan allies on 26 January. Residents have emerged to count the dead and make sense of the fast-moving offensive.
