Loveland Pass was shut down early Sunday morning after dirt surrounding U.S. 6 mixed with melting snow and cascaded over the road. The highway remained closed Wednesday.

A stretch of Loveland Pass in the Colorado high country remains closed after a landslide, but the Colorado Department of Transportation says the first stage of the cleanup effort is nearly complete.The 100 foot wide landslide happened early Sunday evening and covered Highway 6 with a wall of mud and debris that is 15 to 20 feet high.

Loveland Pass closed on Sunday, following the landslide at 5:30 a.m. at an area known as Scottys Curves. According to CDOT, the slide was caused by melting snow saturating materials above the roadway. This was the first partial slide in the area since 2003.
