Two Chicago City Council committees advanced Mayor Brandon Johnson’s 2025 spending plan and a scaled-down property-tax hike and other levies, moving the city closer to passing its 2025 budget on time.

The City Council is one step closer to approving a 2025 budget, but Mayor Brandon Johnson's revised spending plan is expected to face a very close vote by the council on Friday. A pair of City Council committees on Tuesday gave their approval by razor-thin margins to a $17.

The Finance Committee’s 14-12 vote and Budget Committee's 17-to-16 vote set the stage for the marathon budget stalemate to end Friday, averting what might have been Chicago's first budget shutdown.

The method used to get the vote came under fire from several alders who argued that votes for property tax increases are normally separate from those for increases in fines and fees.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposed budget includes $233.9 million in tax hikes including rideshare prices and streaming services. It has already passed a key committee in the city council.

It appears the mayor still does not have the votes to get the budget approved by the full City Council, and critics have accused him of trying to buy votes.

The increase is well below Mayor Brandon Johnson’s previous proposal of $300 million to help cover a $982 million budget shortfall.

A budget package that includes an assortment of fee hikes and a $68 million property tax levy increase passed the city council's finance committee Tuesday with a 14-12 vote and some frustration from alders unhappy with the process.
